Cobweb continued

Hmm, not quite a success, although most parts do look decent now or are going well.

Big disaster struck when I worked on the fireplaces. As per instructions, I let the filler I used dry thoroughly before chiseling stonework. That was a non-starter!!!! I chiseled and chiseled and chiseled....Could not chisel the inside, at all, so the fireplaces are a mess.

Honest, they are an eyesore, even if it does not look too bad on the pic. I was ready to bin the whole cottage, as these fireplaces are so central to construction, plus they hit you in the eye as soon as you open the cottage.

Fortunately Tony ( Mr Bea) has promised me to send me an extra set, so I can prepare all other parts of the cottage and as soon as I have made new and decent fireplaces, it will be easy going..

The chimney stack was OK, I let the filler dry only so much before scribing into it:


( dont look too much at the color, is still under revision and looks better by the time I am typing this)

The walls have been mucked up :






They look nice and dirty ! Maybe some extra "mould".

Meanwhile I have taken up roofing, hope that will turn out OK :-) !!

    Elly the fireplaces look okay in the photos so I'll just take your word that they are a mess - even though they don't appear to be ;) The walls are looking fabulous, I love the 'mould' on them. I'm sure the cottage will end up another of your masterpieces.

      Thank you Sandie, but unfortunately yes, you can believe me . I did leave them a bit before viewing them again and was as disgusted with them as I was before.

    I think the fireplaces look really good smut up the fire box and it will take up a new look all together.

      Thank you Mario! Thought about that, but the floors are very uneven, too and I cannot quite reach them with a file. Even painting is quite hard :-( .

    The fireplaces don't look so bad. You could try going over the inner wall with some air-drying clay to fix the problem.

      Alas, that is no option, either :-( . I considered everything, but there is nothing that will make them salvageable , I am afraid. They are still standing, just in case.

    It is a pity you take such good photographs!!! viewers including me seem to be in agreement that the fireplaces are fine - I am thinking mucking up the insides plus log fires with more mess and a dressed mantel and if true to the period a whole load of clutter around the chimney breast - logs, dogs, rushes, pots plus stuff hanging on them - pots, tools, herbs - they become less of a main feature and more of a background???? That said, we are all the same I have the ugliest chair in Christendom - my first go at 48ths - that people say is just fine - but it is something its 'mother' cannot love!! Your work is beautiful so I can see why you want things to be just right for you.

    Welcome to my humbleblog, Em, and thank you for taking the time to reply at such lengths too. But honest, if you could see those buggers ! I am starting to hate them like poison by now, no way I am going to use them. So I am just hoping Mr Bea will come to rescue me...
